01. Luxrender (opens in a fresh tab)
An unbiased rendering engine, the luxrender team describes software as "powered by super advanced algorithms that simulated light with physics equations in mind, producing realistic, photographic-quality images."
Free for both personal and commercial use, luxrender comes equipped with all major 3d packages including blender, maya, 3ds max, cinema 4d and sketchup. Its functionality is accompanied by various material options, a virtual film that allows the visitor to pause and extend the rendering at any time. Future releases will also direct hair and biased path tracing.

Flexible and responsive, cycles allows artists to work quickly and efficiently, and its global illumination produces high-quality photorealistic images. This version of cycles has blackbody emissive materials, hair rendering, tone mapping and volumetrics.

Available for windows, mac os and linux, kerkythea is a free client program capable of creating high quality renders. Using physically accurate building mixes and lamps, kerkythea has been designed to generate the highest quality renders in the fastest way.
The software accepts .3ds and .Obj models, and has a free sketchup exporter. The site is very helpful in providing explanatory pdfs for people who are not used to kerkythea, and a useful material guide editor so you can actually solve the codes.

Freestyle, an application for rendering non-photorealistic line art, offers something different. The program was conceived during a research project studying the rendering of stylized lines from 3d scenes.
Designed as a programmable interface, players get the strictest control over the style of the final image. Drawing. Inspired by the languages of shading in photorealistic renderings, like pixar's renderman, freestyle offers a visit to a lot of settings, and offers to develop various rich and original styles.
