Revolut, a digital banking app, recently rolled out a new feature that bypasses the requirement for customers to use a selfie while opening new accounts. The new feature, called “identity check bypass,” is intended to streamline the process and simplify onboarding for customers.

In the past, Revolut's self-serve onboarding process required customers to submit a photo of themselves, and the company used a third-party vendor to verify that the photo matched the customer's government-issued identification. This selfie-verification process was time-consuming and cumbersome, as customers had to wait up to a few days for their identity to be verified.

With the identity check bypass feature, customers will no longer need to take a selfie. Instead, the app will use customer information (name, birth date, address, and bypass revolut email address) that is already provided to complete identity verification. This will allow customers to open accounts much faster, since the process will no longer be dependent on a third-party verifying the customer's identity.

The feature is currently available in certain countries, although Revolut has not given a specific list. It is unclear how widely the feature will be rolled out, as the company states that it is continuing to "test and optimize" the feature in order to improve security.

The move to bypass the selfie-verification process is seen as a way for Revolut to expand its customer base by eliminating the major bottleneck in its onboarding process. It could also potentially open the door to new markets, such as countries with stricter identity verification requirements.

Ultimately, the identity check bypass feature is a welcome addition for Revolut customers, as it will make the onboarding process quicker and simpler. Customers who require more stringent identity verification may be concerned about the security implications of the tool, however, and should keep an eye on the rollout and further developments by the company.
