Tropical islands are based around waterways and the ocean, normally within a cluster of numerous islands so these tropical destinations are also perfect for sailing adventures.

In the South Pacific you have trips around Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Tonga, Samoa and more. One of the most popular is Tahiti however these trips are generally higher priced than the other islands.

As for the Caribbean there are close to 7,000 islands within the region and boast a large abundance of marine life in its waterways. So on top of getting a great sailing trip around the islands you can mix it up with some scuba diving or snorkelling.

A marine surveyor is a person who conducts inspections of marine vessels to evaluate and report on their condition and the products in them. They examine the underwater section of hull while the ship is docked. Underwater parts that are checked include the tail shaft, propellers, rudders, and sea valves. The above water sections that are checked include hatchways, free ports, ventilators, bulkheads, and fittings. The surveyor also checks machinery and how it is operating. It is their responsibility to make sure safety standards are met. After inspections, the marine surveyor prepares reports and makes suggestions for repairs that need to be made and actions that need to be taken. They also survey harbors, rivers, and other bodies of water to help determine topography, and the depth of the water and even to decide where the shoreline is.

The salary varies according to location and the type of surveying done. The range can be anywhere from around $55,000 to almost $100,000 each year. For example, in Columbia, South Carolina a marine surveyor makes about $55,000 annually while in Washington, DC area one would average about $93,848.

Training and Education

There is not a national or international licensing requirement. Most marine surveyors get their training through apprenticeships or through correspondence from online distance learning sites. It is not unusual for one to advertise their name with terms like accredited, certified, or qualified depending on where their training was received.

Sample coursework one must take include the study of the maritime industry, marine surveying practices, investigation of marine incidents, budgeting and accounting, effective writing and reporting, ship architecture, marine surveying law and insurance, marine safety, and international safety codes.

Employment Opportunities

Employment opportunities for someone who is a marine surveyor lie in one of four different fields. Generally they work as a government surveyor, a classification surveyor, a yacht and small craft surveyor, or as a private surveyor, or a classification surveyor.

Government surveyors are involved with ship registration surveys and surveys for foreign going ships. Also, the government marine survey enforces ship safety standards. Within this specialty there are two areas: the flag state marine surveyor and the port state marine surveyor. The flag state surveyor reports to the government with whom the vessel is registered and can issue warnings. The port state marine surveyor reports to the government that owns the waters the ship is in. These surveyors have legal authority to issue warnings and detain ships. In today's world with an ongoing threat of terrorism, this is very important domain of marine surveying.

The classification marine surveyor inspects ships to make sure they meet standards. The yacht and small craft surveyor can be self employed or employed by others such as insurance companies.

Most surveyors are self employed. They exam cargoes on board and do inspections when marine accidents happen. Examples of this would be when two ships collide or big oil spills. They would prepare accident reports. Most are independent employees of clients for purposes of insurance claims.
